What is Counseling?

Originally, counseling services were provided by a tribal elder whose wisdom inspired respect in the community. He or she listened to the problem and, based on his or her experience, offered advice and concrete suggestions for solutions. When family members lived close together there was respect for the elders of the group and they were sought out as sources of information, guidance, and counseling.
Today, people often feel overwhelmed and confused about their problems and need help finding solutions. Licensed Professional Counselors help people find answers to their problems and develop insight and tools to address future challenges in their lives. Counseling is provided in a private and confidential setting. Highly trained counselors use their knowledge, experience with mental health issues, and special skills to help their clients find healthy pathways that will improve their lives. Counseling professionals listen empathically and non-judgmentally. They inspire and encourage their clients to examine their past behavior patterns and attain knowledge regarding their role in their personal dilemmas. Guiding clients to recognize the needed changes in their own thought processes will lead to changes in problematic behavior and to happier, healthier tomorrows for clients.
Conflicts within marriages, families, at work, with friends, or in romantic relationships necessitate counseling. Stress, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, anger management, caregiver challenges, and parenting problems cause distress and need to be addressed. Many people need help acquiring coping skills that they can implement in all aspects of their lives so they can move forward with a more pleasant and productive life.
Counselors enable their clients to obtain a greater understanding of themselves and others—a valuable tool for a healthier, more hopeful, and more satisfying life. You don’t have to go it alone—a licensed professional counselor can help you build a better tomorrow.
